TruWall Concrete

Construction start: July 1999
Occupancy: February 2000

Customer Overview: TruWall Concrete engaged Unit Building Services, Inc. to design and construct a facility that showcased their expertise as a commercial concrete contractor. TruWall Concrete, located in Evendale, Ohio, is a full service commercial and industrial concrete contractor for projects of all sizes and degrees of complexity.

Situation: Tony DeCarlo, owner of TruWall Concrete, wanted a high-class design that featured some of the more challenging aspects of concrete construction. He wanted a design he could be proud of and that reflected the specialized skills his company offers.

Solution: Unit Building Services was able to meet TruWall’s requirements by designing and building an elegant, comfortable facility that showcased unique concrete features.

  • The rounded entrance vestibule accentuates the corner of the building and was constructed using round cast-in-place columns. The columns support a round wall system that was formed and placed on the ground and then lifted into place, on top of the columns, by means of a crane.
  • The exterior of the concrete structure is accented with liner panels and rustication trim pieces to give the exterior varying textures and architectural interest.
  • The exterior concrete walls were constructed using tilt-up technology. Tilt-up consists of forming and pouring concrete walls on top of the floor slab and lifting the wall panels into place with a crane.
  • A rounded cast-in-place concrete staircase was constructed off the lobby leading to the 2nd floor training room. The training room is supported by a cast-in-place concrete structural waffle slab. The underside of the waffle slab serves as the ceiling for the conference room and lunchroom on the 1st floor located below the training room.
  • The sidewalks, lobby floor, and stair treads are made of stained, stamped decorative concrete. The lobby reception top is also made of decorative concrete.
  • The roof structure was constructed using an economical bay spacing of steel column bar joist and metal decking. A ballasted membrane roof sloping to the rear gutter line and to internal roof drains in front with external overflow scuppers eliminated the need for secondary roof drains.

Outcome: TruWall is extremely satisfied with their new facility. Tony DeCarlo, TruWall’s owner, is proud to invite customers to his facility, and uses the facility as an example of the varying types of concrete work that his company can complete.

Unit received a thank you letter from Tony DeCarlo that stated “We thank you for putting yourself on the line and pushing towards excellence to make our dream a reality.”
